iPlayer on the Pi

I can’t take credit for this.  here’s how to get the BBC iPlayer working on RaspBMC.  As I said, I can’t take credit.  I got the information from here on the Raspbmc forum.

In short the instructions are simple enough to follow.

first ssh into the RaspBMC terminal.

to do this either use Putty or use another linux machine and type

ssh pi@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

enter yes if needed

and the password is raspberry

wget http://xbmc-iplayerv2.googlecode.com/files/iPlayer-v2.4.15.zip

Then on the XBMC front screen navigate to System -> Setting -> Add-ons -> Install from zip file

now select the Home folder -> home -> pi -> iPlayer-v2.4.15.zip

You should now have the iPlayer installed as a video add-on.

  • Hello – thats for the tut. Great 🙂 Just stuck on the bit where you select the zip file. When I select it nothing happens, no delay, no extra items added to any menu.

What could I be doing wrong?

  • For me, the install is instant. You should see a box in the lower right corner of the screen that says iPlayer installed. It’s not obvious and it might not be shown if your PI’s CPU spikes or something. Just navigate out to the main menu, then select Videos –> Add-ons and the iPlayer should be listed.

I just tested this with my RC2 install.

Note: Raspbmc is still in the testing phase. Although they are saying it’s a Release candidate, it isn’t. It is really in the Alpha testing phase. There are major features being added to the source code every day. So this alone makes it Alpha testing. Maybe I’ll do a post on the development life cycle someday.

  • Worked for me. Thanks.
Will now try same procedure for 4oD and ITV player etc

  • I decided to hang fire on this until we get an actual release version of Raspbmc. Then I’ll go nuts and install loads of add ons running. but for now. I’m happy to wait until we get a proper release that won’t get have to be ditched in order to get updates.

  • I put together a guide with screen shots on how to do the other channels, figured people ending up on this blog might be interested?
